Is the relative proliferation of fast food restaurants and lack of family dinner time worsening obesity stats?

I live in Kansas City, Missouri, USA, which is the city closest to the population and geographic center of America. I think I'm about as representative of "ugly Americans" (in this case fat and ugly) as possible.

One thing that I've noticed in my travels from Seattle to Bakersfield to Dallas to Charlotte to Northern New England to Detroit and back home again is the absolute PROLIFERATION of fast food restaurants everywhere in the country. For example, in Kansas City, there's Lamar's Donuts & Gates and Sons BBQ & Papa Johns Pizza in every little burg and suburb. When I was in Rhode Island four years ago, there were Dunkin Donuts literally every HALF-A-BLOCK of so. Try to drive around Dallas without running into six Braum's Ice Cream drive thrus and Whataburgers per mile.

At the same time, in America, divorce rates have risen exponentially in the past 50 years. The whole idea of the mom like Lucielle Ball preparing dinner for Ricky Ricardo and little Ricky is done and over with. Therefore, more people are single or single parents, and they get tired and end up ordering a pizza or driving thru KFC.

My mom said that she remembered when the only McDonald's in a 50 mile radius of where she grew up was in Columbia, Missouri, where the University of Mizzou was located. Recently the symphony in KC closed the Lyric theater, built in 1950, and replaced it with a mammoth Kauffman Center with double wide seats.

In 1950, my Uncle Dick was a Marine at 5''6" and 130 lbs., which was strapping, big and muscular in that day. I'm 6'1" and 300+ lbs. And I'm not the only man that I know that big or bigger.

I guess what I'm saying is that I'm addicted to fast food. I know my obesity is ultimately my fault, but should Americans like me avoid all fast food? Are we like alcoholics in a liquor super store?

Answer
Fast food isn't the problem per se. The issue lies the the amount of carbohydrates we're eating. The sugar, sodas, sweets, bread, wheat, pasta, potatoes, fries, rice, grains, cereals are the problem. Fast food restaurants contribute, but if you order just a burger and say no to the fries and soda then it's actually quite a balanced meal.

The real concern is the government that has been pushing the "low fat" mantra for the last 50 years. When they say low fat they mean high carbs and that is fueling the agricultural industry to produce more corn, wheat, soya, etc. Those foods go into the "convenience" food category and we just can't get enough.

We're over-weight because of the generally high consumption of carbs, not because of fast food restaurant (although they contribute to the problem to a degree).

What is the best home theater system I should get?

Under $5000
Dedicated room with a projector. etc..

Answer
The answer is simple, you get the best one you can afford. If you care to share what you can afford someone here may be able to make suggestions for specific systems.

Edit: Under $5K is a good start, now for more additional details. What does the $5K include? Will this be a dedicated room or for movie viewing in the living or similar room? For a dedicated room a projector is usually best, for a living room a flat panel monitor is usually best. For a dedicated room you may want to consider theatre seating, nice recliners with cup holders in the arm rest. Will this need to fit within the $5K and if so how much seating capacity? How large is the room?

Basically we need a project plan. We need a detailed outline of what your goals are and what part of this does the $5K budget include? If you have everything else and the $5k is for a surround sound system you can put something together that won't sound all that bad. If it also needs to buy the projector, screen, and other equipment things get a little tighter and we have to look for cost saving approaches to this.

Onkyo TX NR808 http://www.us.onkyo.com/model.cfm?m=TX-NR808&class=Receiver&p=i

Projector:

Projector Central http://www.projectorcentral.com/home-theater-multimedia-projectors.htm Use their online calculator to help choose one that will work based on your screen size and projection distance. http://www.projectorcentral.com/Optoma-HD20-projection-calculator-pro.htm Note that you can get a projector for as little as $999.

Screen:

I canât recommend buying a screen especially since you are planning a dedicated room. Itâs not like you need something that retracts when not in use or anything like that. Itâs just too easy to build a screen to spend the money to buy one. Stretching the material is a little tricky but if you are careful you can do it and save a lot. http://store.cousinsvideo.com/cut-to-size.html You need to consider your projectors brightness and your required viewing angle to determine which material to use. I used a 1.3 gain material, this seems to be a good general purpose choice. The cost of the screen will depend on the size.

Subwoofers.

Generally two subwoofers are better than one as this improves uniformity of low frequency throughout the viewing area. SVS is a respected subwoofer manufacturer. They may be able to provide you with a good solution. http://www.svsound.com/products-sub-box-sb12nsd.cfm You may also want to consider a kit from Parts Express. http://www.parts-express.com/wizards/searchResults.cfm?srchExt=CAT&srchCat=536

Speakers.

This is a difficult area for me to recommend including subwoofers above. Iâve been building my own for many years and there are very few commercial options that are of any interest to me. Speakers are also very subjective so the important thing will be how they sound to you. Youâre just going to have to get out and do some listening.

Cables.

Donât spend a lot of money on cables. Speaker wires need to be of an adequate awg usually 14 ga is ok unless the run is very long. They do not need to be expensive however, you are not going to hear a difference between cheap Home Depot speaker cables and high dollar âaudiophileâ speaker cables. You will however hear a difference in the cheaper speakers you had to buy in order to have the budget for the expensive cables. The worlds best speakers would sound better with cheap wires than cheap speakers with the worlds âbestâ wire. There is nothing scientifically an expensive wire can do to improve your sound and unless itâs undersized there isnât much a cheap wire can do to be detrimental to your sound.
