Is it true you should not mix different brands of speakers in you Home Theater?

George

Like say a Yamaha center speaker with say Klipsh in the rest of your 5.1 or 7.1 system speakers. Will they sound off balance or something or maybe interfere with eachother? I want to know what people have experienced.
Thank You

Answer
haha only the most snobbish hometheatre geek would turn his little nose up at such a concept!!!!!!! let me talk about this a bit as i have heard things like this before.

speakers all have a frequency table. that is a line graph drawn across the spectrum of sound
0 hertz and one end of the graph and maybe

30,000 hertz at the other.

then a squiggled line is drawn across and you can see which frequencies are emphasized( made louder) by the design of the speaker. so to different speakers will have two different frequency tables for many many different acoustic reasons... some people watch for it and some dont. some people will go as far as to prohibit the replacment of an individual driver on one side of the speaker array because the sides will no longer match. for visualization...recording studio speakers generally emphasize no frequency so you get a true playback of your music. home theatre subs will emphasize low frequencies because thats what they are supposed to do...make sense? anyways as far as hand picking which speakers to place at your centre or you front left and right or your rear left and right. it is a very common and celebrated thing to do!! but yes 99.99999% of people will choose identical left and right "pairs" of speakers.

as far as power requirements again its very muddy waters but matching the left and right "pairs" is really the only guideline.

have fun, swap out pieces, mess with the sounds, mess with the EQ tune it, retune it....always ...live it up..

if you crank your amp to loud damage could occur
4 ohm speakers in an 8 ohm amp damage might occur.
but a speaker designed to handle large power hooked to a smaller amp?? yer pretty safe I think....

What should I do If I am homesick and want to be home from boarding school?

ELiza

Hi. I am 14 and started going to a boarding school on the East Coast this fall. I am a freshmen (girl). When I cam here this fall I was really excited. Boarding school was like one really big camp experience. I have been to many camps before so I was not homesick. I thought I was making friends and having fun, and I wouldn't miss my family. The trouble is, a week and a half ago my mom and sister flew out from and saw me. That was when I realized that this is not like camp, its a whole year long! Thankfully I get to go home in two weeks for thanksgiving, but now I don't know if I can go a whole year without my family. My mom was kinda my best friend. I had gone to a private school my whole life, so the friends I had, we were very close to each other as we had grown up together. Now I'm here and I have realized I dont have any true close friends. People already have friends groups and close friends, and i am kinda just hanging out with the nicer, kinda nerdy people. I want to hang out with people and have friends! Sadly people made friends in the first three weeks and I am just stuck in the friendly accuantence zone. I really love the school and its academics, its a great place, but i feel lonely not having any close friends, and this makes me want to go home more. I want to go home, But I want to stay. I worked so hard to get here, I dont want to leave just because I'm slighlty homesick! But I dont think I can last all year being so far from my family.I can only fly home on holidays (4 times a school year), since I live kinda far away. WHat should I do? stick it out since i love the school? Waste the opportunity because I love my family? I want my family to move here so i can see them every weekend at least, but thats not possible until next fall, since my brother has to finish high school in Illinois. Thanks, what should I do??
Thanks Martha, But I am doing all those things already. I have study hall right before bed, and during school days Im really busy with academics and sports. Its mainly during free time and weekends that im lonely - everyones going to dinner with their friends our going to town or hanging out, and I'm just alone or I sit with people from my dorm or soccer team.

If you have a loving family, it's pretty normal to miss them. But it's a temporary situation -- you'll see family at Thanksgiving, at winter break, spring break, summer break...so don't despair! Being away from home for the first time is scary for everyone -- you, your whole family and most of your classmates too.

1. Check with the school! Most boarding schools have specific guidelines in place to help ease the effect of homesickness. I would ask a trusted teacher or principal what policies the school has in place for dealing with homesickness. Your school may have resources specifically designed to help alleviate the issue for you.

2. Talk to your family and friends! Talking about your feelings of homesickness with trusted loved ones or your friends at school can help tremendously.

3. Try peer counseling! Most boarding schools offer peer counseling -- that is a chance for you to forge friendships and get some advice from older girls who have been at the school longer and have experienced exactly what you are going through -- a lot of kids have homesickness so don't feel as though you're alone in dealing with the issue.

4. Keep a journal! I write every day because it helps me figure myself out. A journal gives you a place to write down how you are feeling and work out your emotions and thoughts -- it can be very cathartic and allow you to express yourself freely.

5. Try to keep busy! Join clubs or groups like choir, the theater department, athletic teams, model UN, or other student groups on campus. Those extracurricular activities can help you to stay busy outside of school hours and are a good way to develop friendships -- belonging to a club or group will give you something else to focus on and something to distract your mind with.

6. Try not to phone home. Calling mom and dad can make it worse. It's easy to get all caught up in the emotional upheaval and to forget that really -- most of the time -- at school you are doing fine. Establish set times that you will call mom and dad or they will call you and try to spread the calls out as far as possible -- so that you're not CONSTANTLY reminded of them every day or week.

7. Find a nighttime hobby! Most people find homesickness is worse at night. At nighttime our anxieties and emotions often reach a peak because as we try to rest our brain tends to latch onto the issues that are bothering you in the background of your day. Come up with a way of distracting yourself before bed -- anything to sort of ease the anxiety and focus on other things is a good idea. When I missed my mom at night, I found writing in my journal before bed very helpful -- it let me vent and then I slept more soundly -- a friend liked to work on crafts like a scrapbook she was making for all her school memories -- working on something like that can be very therapeutic. My roommate did latch hook rugs every night before bed. A hobby that you can focus on quietly before heading to bed might help!

Keep in mind -- what you are going through is sensible and normal. And homesickness comes and goes -- it's always hardest shortly after phone calls or visits from home. But renew your focus on school, friends and extracurricular activities and hobbies and you'll find that time flies past. Boarding school can be an amazing experience. Best of luck to you.
