I am looking for a decent home theater system for my 16x15 apartment living room. It will be used for gaming and watching movies. I don't really care so much for loudness, but I am looking for a system with good sound quality. I am willing to spend around $220. Thank you in advance for all the recommendations!

You might need to save a bit more.
A good home theater system includes:
* A full-sized AV receiver
* A separate self-powered subwoofer
* A set of monitor-style speakers
Go to Amazon and search for "Onkyo Home Theater" and you will find lots of box systems that fit the requirements. But the lowest price one is about $380 (but check for deals).
Please avoid the crappy all-in-one systems where the disk drive is built into a skinny 'receiver'. These are disk players with cheap attached speakers.
We get 20+ posts per week here from people with these bargain systems. They try to hook up 5.1 from a game system, or a HD cable or sat box or a Apple TV, etc. - then discover what they gave up for the low price.
FULL SIZED AV RECEIVER - dont settle for anything less.
It will have lots of spare inputs, you can swap out just the speakers or just the sub or just the receiver. The all-in-one systems are NOT designed for this.

Are you talking about setting up a system in your living room or building a dedicated home theater room?
Try going to some home theater fourms where members ask questions and put up pictures of their rooms. HomeTheaterFourm and AVS are two of the better sites.
There is no "one way" to design and build a home theater. The budget makes a huge difference so advice for one guy is totally wrong for another.
Example: I know one guy who took a spare bedroom, built risers for an old couch to create 2 level seating. Used budget but decent speakers, AV Receiver and a DVD player with a low-end projector. He painted the wall to create a screen (yes -there is special paint you can get for this) and spent under $500 and had a great room for parties and sports events. NOTE: He also masked off the windows with alumimum foil and cardboard for light control.
Other guys use their basement and cut out sheetrock with a Sawzall and created a custom-looking place for the equipment.
Etc.
Hit the sites I mentioned and look back at others rooms to give you an idea - then set your budget. You can do a LOT of the work yourself. It's not rocket-science.
