Home Theater refers to recreating a movie theater in your house.
A true home theater is a room that has been specifically designed to be a small movie theater. Everything from a large screen (either a projector or large flat panel of some sort), surround sound speakers, even theater-style seating and heavy sound absorbing curtains on the walls, all contribute towards creating the perfect room for watching movies at home.
Most of us don't have the space for a true home theater, but we can still put together the best system within our particular budget.
Technically, any receiver capable of 5.1 surround sound or better is considered a home theater. The speakers can be wired or wireless - this makes no difference. What is important is the placement of the speakers. You'll have 2 front speakers, which are the main ones for sound. 1 center speaker, mainly used for dialog. 2 rear speakers, for the rear effects. And finally 1 subwoofer, usually placed in a corner, out of the way, which provides all the low rumbling noises from explosions or deep tones from music. This is where the "5.1" comes from - 5 speakers, 1 subwoofer. Other arrangements are possible, but the movie in question has to have an audio signal on it that takes advantage of those extra speakers to get the full effect.
To get surround sound from your movies, your DVD or blu-ray player must be connected to the surround sound receiver with an audio cable that can carry a surround sound signal. Today, this includes optical audio cable, a digital co-ax cable, or a HDMI cable.

IMAX theater in Spokane, WA, real or fake?

Alright so I've been planning on going to Spokane with some buddies to catch Avatar in IMAX, but I've been doing a little research and am finding this "retrofitted theater passed off as an IMAX screen" bullshit very disconcerting. So my question is does anyone know if the AMC River Park Square IMAX theater in Spokane has a legit (or semi legit i.e. larger than standard screen) setup. I'm driving about 2-3 hours to see this thing, not gonna go to the trouble if its just the local multiplex with a big "IMAX" sticker on it. (btw, I know the other IMAX in Spokane, Riverfront Park, is a legitimate IMAX as they used it for the world's fair, but it's not showing Avatar)

If you have an IMAX® 3D theatre that is closer to home I wouldnât waste your time driving to Spokane. Within the Spokane market of Washington state âAvatar: An IMAX 3D Experienceâ is showing only on the IMAX MPX screen at the AMC River Park Square 20 multiplex not the larger IMAX GT screen at the Riverfront Park IMAX Theatre. (Note: as of 20 December 2009 the Big Movie Zone Website is erroneously reporting that the Riverfront Park IMAX® Theatre is currently showing Avatar: An IMAX 3D Experience, which it is not.)

The Riverfront Park IMAX Theatre in Spokane Washington is a 396-seat classic design IMAX GT theater equipped with a medium-size IMAX screen measuring 53.0 feet high by 69.0 feet wide.
It is important to keep a few things in mind. First, the movie Avatar was not filmed using large-format IMAX (3D) cameras; rather it is an IMAX DMR® digitally re-mastered version of the original 35mm film. Second, the number of IMAX MPX screens greatly outnumbers the quantity of IMAX 15/70 GT and SR screens. Combined with all of the exorbitant costs associated with the 15/70 (IMAX) format (see the official IMAX resources listed below,) it is extremely unlikely you will ever have the privilege of watching a full-length Hollywood blockbuster motion picture shot in the IMAX film format in an IMAX GT or SR classic design theater. Instead, your choice will be watching so-called âIMAXâ movies digitally re-mastered for presentation in digital IMAX MPX multiplex theaters or films that have been digitally re-mastered (using the IMAX DMR® process) and transferred to the 15/70 IMAX film format for presentation in IMAX GT or SR classic design theaters.
The question you really need to ask yourself is: in addition to travel expenses, are you willing to pay a substantial price premium for admission to watch IMAX digitally re-mastered movies, be they 2D or 3D, in the more conventional IMAX MPX theater setting. (Personally, I, like many others, do not believe that the cost of admission to view smaller, less immersive, lower resolution digital IMAX movies in MPX theatres should cost anywhere near that of admission tickets for â15/70â shot-on-IMAX films or IMAX DMR 15/70 film transfers presented in GT and SR classic design IMAX theaters.)
