Home theater question?

The room I am putting this in is 24' long x 16'wide x 10' high and the room will be pitch black (no ambient light). My question is with an Optoma HD70 and a screen of 145" diagnal, does it matter what screen gain I get since there is no light? If so what do you recommend Light grey or white GOO paint? What will be the difference? With that said, once the screen is built, what determains how low I should hang the projector from the ceiling in relation to the top of the sreen. The reason I ask this is because I don't want to set this up and have the sceen look distorted. Last question is will a ceiling fan running in front of the projector distort the picture.

I know I have a lot of questions, but since I will be spending several thousand on this, I want it right.

The first 2 links are to 2 reviews of the HD 70. They are a must read to get a good overview of the projector.

Note that the first link is to the page that contains screen recommendations for the HD70. A maximum 100-106" screen is recommended (unless you want a high gain screen -- which risks hot spotting and colour shifts). So I'd suggest your idea of a 145" screen is unrealistic.

Furthermore do you really need that big a screen? Take into account that THX recommend no more than a 40 degree viewing angle (SMPTE suggests more than 30 degrees) ... that is the angle subtended from the viewing position between the left and right screen edge (see the 3rd link for a calculator). While this is a personal preference issue too big a screen is as bad as (or worse than) too small since it will result in viewer fatigue. So, keeping in mind that the apparent size of the screen stays the same as long as the viewing angle is constant you can define the viewing angle you prefer then adjust the viewing distance to accommodate a smaller screen (that will allow room for a second row of seats if you project along the long axis of the room).

A further consideration is the vertical height of the screen. While 10 ft room height is great, a 16:9 143" screen is 70" high, and to mount it optimally for a 40" viewing height you need to have the bottom 15" or less above the ground (eyes should be level with a point no more than 1/3 to 1/2 the height of the screen). This doesn't leave much room for a centre speaker.

Finally, the offset angle on the HD70 is fairly steep (and there is no lens shift), so the projector has to be mounted well above the top of the screen if ceiling mounted. The manual is confusing, but it appears that you need to mount the projector 16" above the top of the screen for a 100" 16:9 screen (and more for a larger screen).

So if you assume 24" from floor to bottom of screen (not absolute, but a common dimension), a 102" 16:9 screen would be 54.2" high, plus a bit over 16" offset ... or a projector mounting height of 94". A 143" screen would require a mounting height of approximately 115" ... which would not fit.

I suggest you plan on a smaller screen than 143" --- ie. 100" or so -- and, given the lack of lens shift and the confusion in the manual re offset angle, mount the projector at the height you calculate based on 16" offset for a 100" screen (i.e. about 94" from floor to the centre of the lens). Then see where the light falls, mark the wall and mount or paint the screen to match. If you use Goo or some other paint formula (There is some good advice on alternatives on the AVS Forum (Google it!) DIY Screen section) paint the screen oversize and then mask with black cloth or paint to match the projected image.

If you want a screen so large you can't accommodate a centre speaker, consider an accoustically transparent screen material instead of paint. See the 4th link for a supplier for a DIY solution.

As to a fan ... you don't want anything in the light path, so you will want to have the projector below the fan ... another reason to go with the smaller screen.

Whether you choose to hire an experienced, certified professional* or not I have taken the opportunity to provide some basic suggestions and list a few select resources below. Hopefully this will help provide some ideas or guidance when it comes to building a new home theater. *(If you would like to install any automation I highly recommended that you hire an experienced, certified professional.)

If you would like to create the most immersive, theater-like experience (depending on your budget of course) I strongly recommend that you consider purchasing a high-performance projection system consisting of a home theater projector (such as JVCâs DLA-RS2 Home Cinema Projector,) video processor, and 102- to 120-inch projection screen capable of displaying movies in a more natural anamorphic 2.35:1 aspect ratio âCinemaScopeâ format. When it comes to fixed-frame front projection screens you would be hard-pressed to do better than Stewart Filmscreenâs GrayHawk RS G3 (or StudioTek 130 G3) screen material mounted to Stewartâs curved Cine-W frame or their flat Luxus Deluxe Screenwall frame.

If your budget allows I also recommend complementing your home theater projector with a high-performance LCD HDTV to handle the majority of your television viewing needs. One important benefit of using the two displays is that it would increase the time between service intervals when it comes to projector relamping. This not only reduces the cost of ownership but would also reduce the wear and tear on both displays.

I would like to pass on one important critique with respect to a significant number of home theaters you will see in articles and portfolios: Ideally within an observerâs field of view (FOV), especially for the more critical area commonly referred to as the âsurround,â the room surfaces should be finished or covered with spectrally diffuse and spectrally neutral materials; avoid strong hues at all costs. One of the more effective methods is to use a MATTE gray paint with a Munsell value between N4 and N8. (From darker to lighter: N4 has L*a*b* values of 40, 0, 0 and N8 has L*a*b* values of 80, 0, 0; Note: some prefer to use Kodak 18% gray as a neutral gray reference rather than the Munsell renotation.) The remainder of the room may be safely finished in your choice from any of the Munsell âNearly Neutralâ pastel colors (though a neutral gray will always be ideal.) Using this approach will help maximize the âambient contrastâ of your viewing environment while allowing the maximum color fidelity from your displays.

I also highly recommend that you install plenty of nonmetallic corrugated flexible conduit, aka nonmetallic flexible raceway or innerduct, for all your A/V and structured cabling requirements. Where applicable use low-voltage wall brackets (or boxes,) to which the innerduct may be connected. This will allow you to use a variety of custom and keystone style wallplates, which will provide a high quality, professional finished appearance for all of your A/V and structured cabling connections.

By the way, whenever you are working with exposed wood wall framing, i.e., no gypsum board, it is very important that you ALWAYS install nail-plates (aka Nail Stoppers¹) wherever you drill holes in wood wall framing for the purpose of routing conduit that will be carrying wire and cable. Nail-plates are intended to protect all wire and cable in the conduit from being pierced and damaged by nails and screws that will be fastened to the wall framing.
