Kev J

my dad is letting me create a custom home theater system in the basement of his house. the room is about 7 and a half feet high not very tall ceiling. it is about 15 feet wide and no bigger then 18 feet long. i wanted to try and incorparate some type of in cieling speakers and/or in wall speakers to the system becuase of the size restraints i feel that will help with space. wanted to know a couple of things. is in cieiling a good idea/ how many speakers should i have/ where to put each ones/ what kind of amp or other receiver should i get in order to work with an hd flatscreen tv? there is goning to be dry wall on the walls and carpet on the floor i figure the carpet will effect the sound possibly.

You would be better off going to Home Theater Forum or AVS forum and reading the areas about dedicated home theater rooms. There are LOTS of great, budget ideas and lots of ways to screw the project up. Way too many issues for Answers.

My advice: Take at least a MONTH to study, learn and plan. Do not purchase anything. Spend that time writing up equipment lists, draw how you are going to layout the equipment, seats, run wires, etc. Make a list of things to buy from and sites to buy from. Again - do not purchase anything.

Then - look at what others have done and what advice they give you for specific questions. Change your plan and equipment list. Repeat several times.

Eventually your plans will settle and then this is the time to plan the construction and purchasing.

For example: did you know if you run wires in-wall you need CL2 or CL3 rated insulation on the wires? Where do you buy this for speaker wires or HDMI cables?

Do you know the proper THX seating distance for the screen/HDTV? How far off from this are you?

etc.

Lots of practical things you never knew or thought of - but the forums above will help you with.

Again - plan, measure, learn, revise the plan, repeat.

Hope this helps.

My family might be making a completely new home theater system in our basement. What should we get for a screen, sound system, seating and/or storage?

Answer
Try to avoid the (HTIB) home theater in a box systems as most of these systems don't delivery the big theater effect. If you can, take the time to visit several specialty hometheater stores. Stores like best buy and circuit city may not have dedicated theater rooms to show off their equipment. They may not carry the high end electronics that deliver the big sound! Check out the link below to give you and your family an idea of some recomended equipment. Good luck.
