Could i put a power inverter into my car, then just hook up a home theater system in my car?
my dad said he had tried it a while bak, and it blew the amp. he assumed it was because of different ohms or sumthing?

This is a very bad idea for several reasons.
1. A home theater is not built to take the variations in temps, constant vibrations and bumps, and ect. that you will experience in a car.
2. Home theater equipment normally runs @ 8ohm vs. 4or2 ohm resistance for car equipment(in theory the inverter would take care of this but why risk it).
3. You are looking at adding a component that takes in energy, converts it to d/c, and regulates the output. This creates heat as well as wasting energy that your car must work harder to create. In cheaper models the output is not always steady and creating the voltage at the amperage you will need will require a large unit hard wired to the battery.
Use equipment that is made for auto use or go home and listen to your system.

looking to buy a used home theater receiver and i already have all 5.1 speakers from my old panasonic home theater which the receiver broke. anyways looking to buy a used $80 yamaha, sony, denon, or onyx receiver without a built in dvd player and is almost a decade old or should i buy a brand new $100 colby home theater built in dvd player that already comes with speakers from walmart. dont forget i already have the 5.1 speakers. thanks

Bad idea.
Those speakers WILL BURN OUT YOUR RECEIVER.
Did that "old panasonic" system come with a single skinny receiver + DVD player in one box? These are probably ultra-cheap plastic speakers that are NOT designed to work with any other equipment.
Many times these speakers are 3-4 ohms which are used to advertise over-inflated power numbers. These low-ohm speakers are getting close to a direct short. Hooking a nice $1,000 receiver to these pieces-of-crap will over-heat the circuits and ruin your receiver (or at least greatly reduce the life-span).
If you dont believe me - at least do this: Hit your local CraigsList and find an older -but name brand- AV receiver from Yamaha, Dennon, Onkyo or Sony,.
This way when you destroy it, you will only be out $100-$200 instead of more.
