How to learn about home theater sound?

Brianyp

Just like there is the comptia a+ for studying about computer. What's it called to learn about home theater systems and all of this stuff.

Answer
Well there is Cedia which is the worlds largest home electronics design and installation association, which has classes and training. But personally I think its more for average consumer home theater systems, not the state of the art equipment and installations that is done by some of the premier high end stores in the country.

So the best place to learn is to read a few books, like THE COMPLETE GUIDE TO HIGH END AUDIO by Robert Harley (4th audition as it includes home theater) read from the better magazines like Absolute Sound, and Stereophile. They review the better high end audio video equipment so that's a great resource to learn what the state of the art audio gear is.

And to really learn about installation, you simply have to work for a high end audio video store who is willing to train you. I have sold and installed the very best in high end audio and home theater systems, it takes much time to really learn it all, and understand what makes a great music or home theater system.

There is also a tremendous amount of bad information, unfortunately, everyone seems to be a expert in this industry and I have found there are very few, so be very careful who you get your information from, don't take it as the end all.

Your welcome to check out my page you might find some great information on high end systems, although my page is all about 2 channel music systems as that is my real passion.

Nikamichi vs Bose? Which one is a better home theater system.?

..........

Answer
I design high-end home theaters for a living. I also have a degree in Audio Engineering. I can without a doubt tell you Bose speakers are garbage. They are roughly equivalent to RadioShack brand speakers. Notice they are never put side by side with any other brand in the store? They always have their own separate display away from every other brand of speakers. They also refuse to publish frequency response charts for their speakers because they know how poorly they perform. If you're looking to spend that amount of money on a home theater audio system youre better off going with a system by Bowers and Wilkins (B&W). You can get a small system from them for around 1200. George Lucas uses them to mix and master all of his movies. In fact, about 70% of all movies you'll ever see were either mixed or mastered on B&W speakers.
